Jarl Kveldulf Sigurdson
Birth place: Hedeby, Denmark
Born: 840AD
Kveldulf’s parents owned a small fishing boat and traded along the coast. In 865 he joined the Great Viking army that invaded East Anglia, then went north to conquer York. He came back with his share of the Danegeld the English paid. He used the money to set up his slave trading business.
He returned to England and took part in the attack on Nottingham in 867. He stayed in England and witnessed the death of Edward the Martyr in 874. He had invested his further shares of Danegeld in more slaves and hired a ship to take them back for sale.
Kveldulf makes a reasonable living trading slaves and anything else worthwhile. He gets an income from a share in a ship in Hedeby.
Kveldulf bought Sigrun from a Norse household, freeing her and eventually took her as his wife. Sometimes she accompanies him on his journeys.
They have settled in Winnington in the hundred of Ruloe in Northumbria and own a large farm.
