Combat

The fury of the Norsemen

Popular mythology paints a dark and violent portrait of the Vikings. However, the Vikings were no more warlike than their neighbours in dark age Europe. The confusion results from a misunderstanding about what we mean by Viking.

The word meant the act of seaborne raiding or adventuring. Scandinavians would ‘go viking’, it was something you did, not something you were. Much of their reputation was a result of the writings of the Christian monks who were often their victims. They believed that God had sent pagans to punish the Anglo Saxon kingdoms for their lack of faith.

 Combat within the society

Our combatants train regularly and must pass safety tests before being allowed to take part in a battle. Weapons are blunt and must meet society safety and authenticity standards, bows are of limited draw weight, helmets (or helmets disguised as hats) must be worn, and we insist that all participants wear armoured gloves.

Combat is open to both men and women aged 16 or older. If you wish to fight, we will train you in sword, axe or spear and get you ready to take a safety test with one of the society’s assessors. You can then fight in any Vikings show in the country. Other skills include slings, bows and two-handed spears.
